Soil and tillage in Central India

A large part of Central India has black cotton soil. It sticks when wet and turns hard and cracked when dry, so timing matters a great deal — tilling at the right moisture saves fuel and protects soil structure.

In hard, dry conditions disc-based primary tillage is more reliable, while at medium moisture a mould board plough gives better inversion. Either way, a cultivator follows to prepare the seedbed. For more detail, read the soil preparation guide.

काली मिट्टी बहुत गीली हो तो जुताई पर ढेले सख्त हो जाते हैं, और बहुत सूखी हो तो हल पूरी गहराई तक नहीं उतरता। जब मुट्ठी में मिट्टी दबाने पर वह जुड़े लेकिन हाथ में चिपके नहीं, वही समय जुताई के लिए सबसे उपयुक्त होता है।
